New Captian please! Solskjaer officially announces Arsenal target leaving Manchester United in the summer
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Arsenal transfer target Antonio Valencia will be leaving the club, and he will need to find a new captain for the club.
The 33-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season and United have not taken their option for extending it for a further 12 months, which means that he is all set to pack his bags and walk away from the club after a decade of top-level service for the Red Devils.
And that led to shock speculation that Arsenal boss Unai Emery may be interested in taking him to the Emirates on a short-term deal, as the Spanish boss is keen to provide some much needed back-up to the injury prone Hector Bellerin, as Stephen Lichsteiner has not impressed like many had hoped.
Now amid all the transfer speculation surrounding the future of Valencia, Solskjaer has come out and revealed that he will be looking for a new club captain, as Valencia will be departing the club, he told Sky Sports news: “I’ve got a couple of players in my head that could be in the group of captaincy.
“We’ve had Antonio [Valencia], he’s going. We’ve had David de Gea, Ashley Young, Paul Pogba, Chris Smalling. We will see who’s here for next season.”
Valancia recently stoked the fire that he could be on his way to the MLS at the end of the season after the full-back retweeted and liked a fan hoping the news is true that he would be linking up with Wayne Rooney at DC United.
The tweet the fan quote tweeted from an Ecuadorian outlet says in Spanish: “Based on a special request from one of them, the Manchester United goalscoring duo will become a reality again in the capital of the United States. Two-year contract about to be finalized with D.C. United.”
It is easy to see just why Emery was thinking about taking him to the Emirates, as he still has that top-level quality that many experienced players have towards the back-end of their top-level playing career.
But maybe it is the right move for the full-back to make that move to the MLS and link-up with Rooney, as he would not be a regular at the Emirates and in America he would be seen as one of its biggest stars.
