Ex-England star Joe Cole has named the ‘obvious choice’ to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United amidst all the reports and the rumours that the Red Devils board have already started looking at possible replacements for the unhappy looking Dutchman.

Erik Ten Hag came to Old Trafford as one of the best managers in the game – but he has been unable to handle the pressures of managing a club like Man United and has struggled to get the results needed.

That has led to alot of reports that he is only a few games away from getting the sack – although the Manchester United board are more likely to keep hold of the Dutchman a couple more games before they make the decision on whether to let him go or not.

Cole believes a change is necessary and views former England boss Gareth Southgate as the ‘obvious choice’ to replace beleaguered Ten Hag. The former Englan boss was heavily criticised for his tactics, the dour nature of England’s display and how timid the team looks ahead of Euro 2024, but he has still been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

‘Gareth Southgate is the obvious choice for Manchester United,’ Cole told Paddy Power.

‘If you look at the ownership group, with Dan Ashworth – he worked with Southgate at the FA and it’s actually reminds me a lot with when Gareth took over at England and having to steady the waters.

‘The fans weren’t happy, and he managed to galvanise them and it might be the right place at the right time for Gareth and I hate talking about next managers when the manager is still in play but it’s really tough to look at Manchester United and – knowing how football is – know that they must be thinking about doing something.

‘Erik ten Hag is a top manager, and he’d walk away with his head high and silverware on the table – like he did at Ajax. He’ll get another job and that might suit his style a bit better.’

Southgate done a decent job as England Coach – but he needs to move over and let somebody take the international squad to that next level – this side is far too good to not be winning any trophies.

Is he right for Manchester United? That is a question only the Red Devils board will know.
