Spaniards open door for Manchester United to sign game-changing star in January

Barcelona will not be able to register Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal target Dani Olmo, after a Spanish court rejected an appeal, meaning the former RB Leipzig winger may not be able to play for the club from January 1.

The 26-year-old, who helped Spain win Euro 2024, joined Barcelona from Leipzig in August but he was only registered for the first half of the season as Barcelona could not meet La Liga’s wage cap restrictions.

Barcelona registered Olmo after their squad was hit by long-term injuries, allowing the club to allocate a portion of wages to register the player. His four-month allowance will expire at the end of December and the Spanish court rejected the club’s request to provisionally register him.

The Commercial Court No 10 has rejected Barcelona’s request for provisional registration of Olmo until June 2025, a ruling welcomed by La Liga.

“La Liga has today learned of the ruling… rejecting the request for the provisional registration of Dani Olmo until June 30, 2025, on the grounds that none of the necessary conditions for the adoption of an interim measure have been met,” said the Spanish league in a statement on Friday.

“The ruling also stresses that ‘the purpose of allowing additional spending is so that a long-term injury does not weaken the team’s competitiveness, not to use a long-term injury to allow the registration of players whose salaries exceed the limit, which is what FC Barcelona is attempting’.”

The news that Barcelona may not be able to register the gifted Spaniard means that the Premier League clubs may now have a chance to sign the midfielder in January, and if they were able to get him all signed up, it could be one of the best January bargains that we have seen in recent seasons.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United will be keeping a very close eye on this situation, the January window is only a few weeks away.
