Sporting Director opens up and makes statement on future of ‘very important’ £83M star – Man United wants to sign
AC Milan sporting director Igli Tare has commented publicly on the growing speculation surrounding forward Rafael Leão, who has once again been linked with a summer switch to Manchester United.
Speaking to Italian media this week, Tare acknowledged increasing interest from top European sides but stopped short of guaranteeing that Leão would remain at San Siro beyond the summer transfer window. “Rafa has two years left on his contract and he’s very important for us”. His skills are not in doubt, this season he’s suffered from injuries”
His comments arrive amid renewed reports in England suggesting Manchester United are actively exploring attacking reinforcements and view Leão as a potential marquee signing. The Premier League side have monitored the Portugal international for several seasons and are believed to be assessing the financial feasibility of a deal, particularly given Leão’s substantial long-term contract and release clause.
Leão has been a standout performer for Milan since joining from Lille in 2019. His pace, dribbling power, and ability to influence games from the left flank have made him one of Serie A’s most explosive attackers. Despite a quieter goal-scoring campaign compared to his title-winning 2021–22 season, he remains central to Milan’s offensive structure.
Sources in Italy maintain that Milan would prefer to keep Leão, viewing him as essential to the club’s competitive project, but they also acknowledge that a large offer—potentially exceeding €100 million—could force negotiations. Arsenal, for their part, are expected to be active this summer as they look to strengthen their squad’s attacking depth and diversify their forward options.
