Tottenham ready to sign defender Koch with Arsenal looking to complete £25 million bargain Alderweireld deal
Tottenham are interested in signing Freiburg defender Robin Koch as a potential replacement for Arsenal target Toby Alderweireld.
Alderweireld is regarded as one of the finest leaders in Europe right now and has been a big reason why Spurs have been so good under the guidance of Mauricio Pochettino over the past few seasons.
But despite many months of contract talks, Alderweireld has been unable to agree a new contract at Spurs, with many reports suggesting Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy is unwilling to break the clubs strict wage policy.
That has led to a lot of speculation in the media that the likes of Arsenal could make a move for Alderweireld in the summer window, as they seek to bolster their back-line issues.
Gunners boss Unai Emery spent over £70 million trying to improve the back-line last summer, but there are big issues at the back for Arsenal and that is the main reason why they failed to get back into a top four spot.
And the fact that there is a clause in the centre-back’s contract which means he could leave for £25million this summer, will mean that most clubs will try and secure a bargain transfer deal.
Now Spurs are planning for his possible exit according to BILD, who say Spurs have been impressed with Koch’s performances this season in the Bundesliga and could make a raid.
Freiburg are said to want more than the £18m they received for Caglar Soyuncu last summer if they sell, a fee which is well within the transfer budget of Tottenham.
Losing Alderweireld for a bargain fee this summer will be a huge blow for Spurs as many fans believe he is the clubs best centre-half, but to lose him to Arsenal would be an even bigger blow.
Arsenal have a habit of persuading Tottenham players to make the short move across London, and they are more willing to offer Alderweireld the kind of wages that he is reportedly seeking.
He is just the type of leader that Spurs cant afford to lose, but Arsenal would love to have as their back-line is simply not good enough.
Koch has been impressive this season, but to replace Alderweireld, Spurs need to splash the cash and land a real top-class act.
