Reds legend Thompson would love £65 million Man United target Coutinho to sign for Liverpool
Liverpool great Phil Thompson has claimed that he would take unhappy Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho back in the summer.
Coutinho was an absolute superstar at Anfield before he got his dream move to Barcelona just a few seasons ago, and despite the Reds impressive attack, there have been many in the media which have claimed they have not found an adequate replacement.
And there has been some speculation that he could be heading back to the Premier League at the end of the season, with Manchester United reportedly keen to tie down a massive £100 million transfer deal.
However, former Liverpool captain Thompson said bringing Coutinho back to the Premier League for half of what Barcelona paid for him would be a shrewd bit of business.
“I would take him back in a heartbeat, but it would have to be now,” Thompson told Sky Sports News. “You don’t want to leave it another 12 months, I think he still has the ability.
“He’s suffered at Barcelona. We’ve seen him playing out wide on the left, but he’s not Neymar.
“He likes to be in the middle where he can pull strings and is getting on the ball to hurt teams.
“He doesn’t do that and he’s not a left-winger and that’s where he’s playing at Barcelona; they don’t love him like Liverpool loved him.”
Klopp is a boss that knows what he wants and he will be eyeing up a number of possible signings, and he will be given the money in the summer transfer window to spend big money, so surely he will manage to acquire the right kind of player.
Liverpool will need to add a few more superstar players to the squad if they are to challenge for more than the Premier League title next season, and although Coutinho is no longer loved by many of the Reds fans, there is no doubt that he could still add some much needed quality to the Liverpool attack.
And if they could get him for something close to the £65 million mark, then it would be a very good bit of business by the club.
