£25 million man Wood makes clear Newcastle vow to fans after OFFICIALLY completing move
Chris Wood has admitted he simply could not turn Newcastle down after being asked to swap Burnley’s fight for Premier League survival for their rescue mission.
The Burnley striker’s move to St James’ Park was confirmed on Thursday morning after the Magpies activated his £25m release clause.
Wood put pen to paper of a two-and-a-half year deal, and has been registered in time to make his black-and-white debut on Saturday against Watford.
And after sealing his move to the Magpies, Wood insisted he had little option after being offered the opportunity to play a part in what the Tyneside club’s ambitious new owners hope will be the start of something big.
He wrote on Instagram: “Where do I start! A whirlwind 24/36 hours it has been. I’m absolute delighted to be joining this amazing club.
“Steeped in history and passion. I know walking out at St James’ Park will be a great occasion and I can’t wait to get started with this team full of talent.
“Tough few months ahead for us all but I’m up for this exciting challenge and I know the lads are too. Like to thank you all for the welcome you have given me already.
“The overwhelming support doesn’t go unnoticed. Hopefully I can repay all this amazing support on the pitch.
“Catch you all Saturday.”
“It wasn’t an easy decision. I just think it’s a great opportunity. spent four-and-a-half great years there, every single year I really enjoyed myself there. My team-mates, the staff, the club as a whole was fantastic.
“To be honest, I wish I’d left when Burnley were further up the league, but that’s just how it is and it’s just how football is sometimes. Nobody can plan these sorts of things, you’ve just got to look at what’s in front of you and how you’re doing with football at the point in time. It was a case of this is a massive opportunity and a massive club, and something that I couldn’t turn down.”
