Manchester ready to snap up £38M Premier League star ahead of summer exit!
Manchester United are monitoring West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes as part of their summer recruitment plans, with The Telegraph reporting that the 21-year-old has re-emerged as a serious target for the Old Trafford club amid growing expectations that he could leave the London Stadium.
United have been tracking the Portugal youth international throughout the season, with their interest intensifying in recent weeks after previously deciding against a move for him last summer, according to reports.
The midfielder is understood to be on the radar of several top European clubs, but United are among the sides most closely following his development as they prepare for a midfield rebuild ahead of next season.
Fernandes, who joined West Ham in a deal worth up to around £42 million following his spell at Southampton, has impressed in a difficult campaign for the Hammers. Despite the club’s struggles near the lower end of the Premier League table, the 21-year-old has remained a consistent performer, contributing five goals and four assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.
West Ham’s precarious league position is understood to be a key factor in the situation. Reports suggest Fernandes could be available if the club are relegated, with clauses in his contract potentially facilitating a move under those circumstances.
Even if the Hammers survive, however, there is a growing acceptance that retaining the player could prove difficult given the level of interest and his continued development.
Manchester United’s pursuit forms part of a broader strategy to refresh their midfield options as they prepare for a busy transfer window. The club’s hierarchy is believed to be prioritising additions in central midfield, with internal planning already underway for multiple signings in the area. Fernandes is viewed as a long-term project who could complement existing options such as Kobbie Mainoo, who recently committed his future to the club with a new long-term contract.
United’s renewed qualification for the Champions League has strengthened their position in the transfer market and is expected to allow them greater flexibility in targeting young, high-potential players like Fernandes.
The club’s recruitment department has reportedly been impressed not only by his technical profile but also by his ability to operate as both a progressive passer and an energetic ball-winner in midfield transitions.
While Manchester United are currently seen as one of the frontrunners, competition is expected from other elite European sides who have also been monitoring the player’s progress. However, United’s long-standing interest and continued scouting presence suggest they are well placed should West Ham decide to sanction a sale.
No formal bid has yet been made, and negotiations are not believed to have reached an advanced stage. Nevertheless, Fernandes is expected to be one of the midfield names to watch closely heading into the summer window as uncertainty continues over West Ham’s league status and squad planning
