Heskey opens up and has ‘leader’ message for £75 million Liverpool star Van Dijk

Emile Heskey has claimed Virgil Van Dijk leads the Liverpool back-line just like legend Jamie Carragher.

Van Dijk signed for Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for £75m and has played 51 games across all competitions, helping the Reds become one of the most defensively sound sides in the Premier League.

His leadership at the back has also helped Jurgen Klopp’s men mount a serious challenge for this year’s Premier League title, with the club four points clear of defending Champions Manchester City, who have been the only side to beat Liverpool in the league this season.

And Heskey believes Van Dijk leads the line just like Carragher, who won the Champions League, two FA Cups and three League Cups duringb his time at Anfield.

Heskey said on the Sky Sports website: “When you look at Van Dijk and when you look at Liverpool, in essence they haven’t had that leader I would go as far back as Jamie Carragher.

“Someone who really commands a defence. Someone who really stands out and is counted for. Someone who is marshalling people around. Now Van Dijk has come in and he seems to be that man.

“He’s a great defender, he’s quick, he’s good in the air, he barks out orders. So what more do you need? It seems that everyone who plays alongside him [he] always brings out the best in them as well.”

Here is what we think.

Right now there are not too many defenders that are in the same league as Van Dijk, he is one of the best defenders in world football and spending £75 million to acquie his services looks like an absolute bargain.

He is a big reason why Liverpool are so good at the back and keeping him fit is a must if Liverpool are to win the League this season.
