Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho refused to sanction a move for Virgil van Dijk before the defender moved to Liverpool, according to reports.

A source told the paper that United’s scouting department has been bringing back reports on a host of players, but have been largely ignored, and according to the report Mourinho didn’t feel it necessary to sign another central defender, having already forked out a combined £75m for Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof.

Manchester United legend Denis Irwin is surprised by how impressive Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been in the early days of his Old Trafford career.
Wan-Bassika had a breakthrough season at Crystal Palace last season and has fast become one of the brightest talents in the Premier League, especially as the likes of United, Tottenham and Liverpool were all reportedly vying for his services.
But with long-serving Antonio Valencia leaving the club at the end of last season, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was desperate to add the young man to his squad during the summer window and got the United hierarchy to sanction a £55 million deal for the young Englishman.
And since his mega money move to Old Trafford, Wan-Bissaka has been an everpresent at right-back for the Red Devils so far this season and has impressed on numerous occasions, as he grows into a top-class right-back.
And legend Irwin has come out and admitted that he is pleasantly surprised to see just how easy Wan-Bassika has adapted to life at the big time, telling Sky Sports news: “His positional sense looks really, really good.
“That’s a huge surprise for someone that’s been a winger for years.
“He’s got a lot to learn obviously but he’s been a huge plus this year.
“We need to start keeping clean sheets again but I think we’ve started making steps in the right direction in helping in our defensive work, I really do.”
