Van Gaal tells £60 million Liverpool, Man United target De Ligt who to join after Ajax

Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has urged Ajax sensation Matthijs de Ligt to join either Manchester City or Barcelona.

De Ligt is one of the most sought after talents in world football after developing into a top-class centre-half with Ajax and there has been a lot of speculation that he could make a £60 million move to one of the worlds biggest clubs at the end of the season.

United, Liverpool and Arsenal have all been linked with a move for the Dutchman, with the Premier League trio all ready to splash the cash and beat off the likes of Barcelona and Juventus to secure his services, especially as they seek to improve their squads in the summer.

However, former United boss Van Gaal has weighed in on the potential destination of De Ligt and told the Ajax captain to choose either Manchester City or Barcelona at the end of the season.

“De Ligt at Juventus? I think De Ligt can play in any competition,” the former United manager told Ziggo Sport.

“In Italy they are the masters of defence, so he can best develop there.

“If I had the chance I would go to Barcelona. They have central defenders who are not too good, so he will play there.

“Or I would go to Manchester City. I don’t think the central defenders are that great either, so he’ll play there too.”

Here is what we think.

De Ligt has his choice of clubs when he decides to leave and there will surely be a transfer battle to nail down his signature. But he does not need to listen to anyone, even Van Gaal, as the decision will come down to whom offer the biggest fee and whom will give him the best opportunities to develop into a world class defender.
