Listening Nicolas? Gunners legend Wenger ‘he will need to fight’ at Arsenal
Gunners legend Arsene Wenger has warned Nicolas Pepe that he will have to fight to earn his Arsenal place.
After having a breakthrough season last year for Lille, Pepe managed to secure himself a massive £72 million move to the Emirates as Gunners boss Unai Emery felt he needed to bolster his already impressive attack with another winger.
But despite some classy glimpses of what is to come from the young man, Pepe has so far failed to fulfil the potential that many Arsenal fans had hoped after the club broke the club record to acquire his services ahead of Bayern Munich, as he is really struggling to adapt to the Premier League.
And Wenger admits he supports Arsenal’s decision to sign Pepe but feels the winger must start to deliver due to the strong competition for places in Unai Emery’s attack, he told told Omnisport: ‘I like the player and I thought it was a good decision [to sign him],’
‘He’s not yet completely adapted and you have to give him some time. He looks a little bit to be playing not with the freedom he did in France at the moment.
‘I see some characteristics of his game, especially off the ball, that don’t happen at the moment.
‘On the other hand, I must say we have good young players who can play on the flanks, [and] that he will have a fight to keep his position.’
Pepe is a very young player that has come to Arsenal with a very big price tag, and that is seemingly weighing on his shoulders, especially as there is already so much pressure to be a huge success at the club.
Arsenal probably should have spent that kind of money on a player that has already had time at the very top of the game, as fans will not give the lad too much time to adapt. So he needs to step up and show the Premier League just why Arsenal paid so much money to secure his services.
The lad has talent and ability, there is no doubt, but the longer he goes with impressing in the English game, the harder it will be for him to become a success in the Premier League.
