West Ham will return to try and sign Matteo Guendouzi from Marseille in the summer after missing out on the Frenchman in January

The Hammers spent some serious money in the summer transfer window signing players that they believe could propel them into a Champions League challenging position.

However – that has not worked out and they are languishing down near the bottom in the Premier League and find themselves in a relegation battle that nobody could have imagined.

That led to speculation that West Ham were interested in bringing another midfielder to the squad – and set their sights on trying to sign Marseille star Guendouzi.

West Ham faced competition from Aston Villa as Unai Emery is keen to re-unite with the Frenchman. -but were reportedly reedy to pay close to £40 million to get the Frenchman all signed up.

There was even a Guendouzi deal green light for West Ham and Aston Villa after the French club’s admission but there’s a chance of a deal being struck as   L’Équipe are reporting that Marseille were open to selling Guendouzi this transfer window.

However – a move back to the Premier League is something that Guendouzi doesnt fancy and decided that he would rather continue playing his football with the French giants.

Since Guendouzi left Arsenal just a few seasons ago – he really has reignited his career back in France and looks like a brilliant maestro.

However – it is very ambitious for West Ham to make a move for the player as he will not want to join a relegation battle – to go from a Champions League club to a side near the bottom of the League would be a made decision.

He is happy at Marseille- he is playing on a regular basis – But if the Hammers do stay up and move up the table – players like Guendouzi will want to make the move that is for sure
